Forest Retreats in Lumsdale Valley

BArch (Hons) Architecture Year 1 Studio Project 3 of 4, Nottingham Trent University

The brief for this project was to create 3 interconnected lodges or retreats within the varying forest terrain. Each retreat had a limited area limit and were required to be above, on and below ground.
Morning Lark
The lodge that sat directly on the landscape was inspired by the morning lark, the inwards roof symbolising the spread wings. This retreat was for the 'morning people' and thus had a large window facing East towards the early daylight.
Daytime Woodpecker
The South facing circular window and lightwells that help light the underground lodge are woodpecker-inspired. The continuation of the landscape onto the roof helps conceal this retreat into its context.
Night Owl
The third towering above-ground lodge, tailored to those who enjoy the evenings, was inspired by the night owl. The panoramic window, embodying the head-turning element of an owls vision faces South to capture the evening light.
The paths that connected the lodges, envisioned as locally-sourced timber, lead to the nearby access route to the site. For the guests to enjoy the outside forest environment there is a deck with space for outdoor seating.
