Featuring the art of Boyd K. Packer
Our team at Stephen Hales Creative has been working over the past year with the Boyd K. Packer family to design The Earth Shall Teach Thee: The Life Work of an Amateur Artist. This large-format book features the art of President Boyd K. Packer of the LDS Church’s Quorum of Twelve Apostles, and includes his thoughts on what he has learned about The Creator by being a creator himself.
President Packer wanted to make sure that readers understood that he considers himself an “amateur artist,” even though, by our standards, his intricate carvings of birds in their natural settings are world-class. In meeting with him, it was obvious that he loves nature and has used his art as a way to connect with the natural world while dealing with many of the administrative pressures he feels. He speaks in the text of the book about creating sermons in his mind while crafting art with his hands.
The first chapters in the book discuss President Packer’s early life, showing some of his drawings and carvings as a schoolboy. A few of his illustrated letters home while he was in the military are included, as well as his early work as a young father. Most of the book focuses on his beautiful bird carvings, featuring new photography that was commisioned just for this book. The Earth Shall Teach Thee should be arriving in stores in April 2012.
