Abandoned Malls

Abandoned Malls: A Photo Essay
A person walks across the carpark at Harbour Bay Ferry Terminal, Batam. Most vehicles visit the terminal district for ferries to Singapore, Malaysia, and other parts of the Riau Islands.
Holes in floor tiling, Harbour Bay Shopping Mall, Batam. The building was built as part of an attempt to create a new business district in Batam, but remains largely underutilized and abandoned.
An empty plaza in one of the shopping malls around Harbour Bay. Even during weekends and holiday periods, the mall is derelict and deserted, kept afloat only by the hotel still in operation above.
A dusty canvas covers a BreadTalk outlet in Harbour Bay. BreadTalk no longer operates in Indonesia, but none of the furnishing and equipment have been removed, likely due to the lack of funds.
A locked store in Harbour Bay mall. Most shops in the mall are in varying states of decay.
An unfinished shop, with renovation works incomplete. The blue plastic covering the 'new' glass windows have already melted under the tropical sun.
A man walks past a closed store. Despite the mall's dereliction, most of the open stores that offer food and refreshments see brisk traffic due to the mall's location next to the ferry terminal.
One of the remaining operating stores in Harbour Bay. The mall has remained largely empty for about half a decade.
A shop turned store for construction equipment and supplies. With enough spare space, there is no need to shift required tools to an inaccessible location.
Broken tiles in a closed arcade. Unfinished demolition works are the norm, as continuing demolition costs more than leaving the shop to decay.
Stacks of chairs line the shuttered entrance to an abandoned clothing store. Few of the establishments that were originally there stayed open.
A shop for rent in Harbour Bay. Many such closed outlets exist, but landlords have found difficulty finding tenants.
Rubble from demolition works outside the back of a shop in Harbour Bay. Most demolition works, if any, remain incomplete
The backyard of the shopping mall in Harbour Bay. Without maintenance, trash and rubble fill the loading bays of the mall.
