Project Overview:

The objective of this project was to design a layout for Paul Rand's "Design and the Play Instinct". Supplied with text and images, I had the task of organizing the content in a grid system and was only allowed to work with black, white, and one accent color. I decided to keep my layout fairly clean and minimalistic. The layout follows a three column and two-column grid, which gave me a lot of flexibility when organizing the copy. Because the book is about exploring "play", I wanted my book to have a fun feel, so I chose a yellow-orange as a bright pop of color to liven up the layout.
Process:

I first read the copy of the book and looked at all the images supplied. Then I began to brainstorm and sketch ways to organize the layout in a grid system.
Construction:

After I created my book layout using InDesign, I printed the book pages and cover. To bind the book together, I created my own book press out of 2 bamboo cutting boards, washers, 2 large screws, and wing nuts. This press holds the pages together in place and applies pressure while the pages are glued. It was a struggle to neatly put the stack of paper between the press, but after a few tries and the use of handy binder clips, I was able to neatly slide the paper in the press.
