Merchandise Concepts
I was asked by a company to put together all the Artwork for their retail box concept. During my concept stages and a few pitches the company was granted a license from Disney for Star Wars. We did get contracts with two High Street Chains however the project was pulled later due to production costs and economics. I produced all the Artwork for the interior, exterior and merchandise products inside the box. The only product I didn’t come up with inside (as it was just a concept idea), was the Origami vehicle pieces, which came from the wonderful Star Wars Origami book by Chris Alexander. The idea was to have an included vacuumed T-Shirt, iron-on badges (to personalise the T-Shirt), sticker decals, collectable Artwork / Posters. Also we thought it be great if the box could be used as some sort of staging. The idea of this was to minimise the Carbon Footprint of the product, as so much packaging today is simply thrown away. Also it would make the product more fun for the consumer! You will see the idea I came up with later.
Box & Fold out Concepts
Next were some of the box concepts and designs and the way the outside fit together. At the time the patent pending part of the box was the foldout section. This encased the interior merchandise whilst adding structural integrity when combined with the wrap around section. The idea with the fold-out section was that it not only served a purpose but was also a nice piece of Artwork that people could put on their walls. One idea we had was that the box could be posted straight from the location of purchase, hence the concept section with the address similar to a postcard. That last section shows some ‘Belly Band’ ideas. This could be removed easily, containing garment size information and retail price. They wanted the box itself could be as minimalist and aesthetic as possible.
Star Wars – Box Contents & Staging
This just shows different ideas I came up with of what may be included in the box and just how adaptable it could be. I think the key rule is whatever was included needed to be as thin as possible or fold out in some manner. Posters are always great and things people love to collect!
We were fairly pressed for tie and I came up with the ship platform concept, with it being quite iconic scene in Cloud City in the Star Wars franchise and thought it would be fairly easy to put together. These sections, along with all the other merchandise could be collectable with different options. I thought you could have an X-Wing ship and maybe a Dagobah swamp landing area, an AT-AT or Snowspeeder  and a Hoff snowy environment…the list is really is endless! Lastly I finished off with some T-Shirt Concepts, just tried to keep it simple. I thought having customisable sleeves was a nice idea to make your T-Shirt more personal i.e. decide to be an Imperial or a Rebel, have a rank etc. We found a company that produced specialised badges that could be ironed onto garments or used as sticker decals.
