West Elevation
The New Affordable Zero Homes are intended to provide an alternate to similar housing options offered by non-profit home building organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Project Home, Help USA, and the Make It Right Foundation. The homes are designed in a duplex style. Both unit styles are entered from the west, with the A1 unit’s detached facade oriented to the north and the A2 unit’s detached facade oriented to the south. These performance driven duplexes strive to offer the next level of affordable housing by exceeding the baseline standards necessary to meet Zero Energy Ready certification levels. This will be achieved through a super insulated building envelope, the incorporation of passive design strategies, and the use of durable, maintenance free building components.

Architectural: The New Affordable Zero Homes are designed in a contemporary style with characteristics from a typical Philadelphia rowhome. These homes respond to the Philadelphia vernacular use of brick as an exterior building material. The homes combine the use of brick facades and HardiePlank Lap siding in order to keep construction costs to a minimum. The front entrance of the home provides a front porch as seen in the surrounding homes to continue the development of community within the neighborhood.
Envelope: The exterior walls are a double-stud wall assembly with two inches of spray foam insulation toward the exterior and dense pack cellulose insulation between the studs. This type of assembly will reduce the possibility of thermal bridging.
Natural Daylight Analysis: The form of the homes is a response to maximize the amount of natural daylight. The adjacency of rooms were organized to maximize the amount of natural daylight into all habitable spaces. An analysis was performed to ensure the maximum amount of daylight at 9AM and 3PM, with a target goal of 70% and 60% respectively. The increased use of natural daylight will reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day, keeping operational costs to a minimum.
