This cork dress was made for a class project at Washington State University. The project was to create a sustainable garment. The designer chose wine corks as her recycled material for the garment due to the easy access to used wine corks from her parents’ winery, Kyra Wines. Other materials used to create this cork dress include: wine, wire, string, and muslin. The techniques used to manipulate the piece include: First, the muslin was draped and sewed into the foundation of the dress. Next, the corks were cut into short cylinders using a bread knife and electric knife then arranged on the bodice of the dress to create flowing vertical lines. Some of the cut corks were dyed in wine and hot glued flat to the dress in order to bring color into the piece. The corks soaked in wine for three days and were stirred every couple hours. After the soaking, they were air dried for another three days. Finally, corks cut into triangles were drilled and then strung onto string and placed in a way that adds movement to the piece. The designer’s vision of the dress was inspired by the flappers of the 1920's and added this into the recycled wine cork dress.
