Byron Colman's profile

Laird - First Range of Furniture

Entering my final year studying product design at the University of Lincoln, we were given two main projects to fulfil whilst writing our dissertation. One of these projects was titled 'Futures'.

Aptly named futures due to it being a chance for us to sculpt our own brief, rather than be confined to set boundaries. I decided straight away that I wanted to design and develop my own brand, not as a business but as a personal directive.

I wanted to create an identity for my work that best reflected me on a personal level, in hoping to end my university experience with a large body of work which stated exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, furniture design.

I had free reign on my ideas, finally being able to design products that I wanted, purely for the sake of it. My brand became known as 'Laird' a word taken from the old english language meaning lord. The reason for this was because I have always had a love for vintage things, such as antique furniture, ornaments and eccentric behaviour as well as also being bough a lordship from my friends in 2013.

The following images show my brands first range of ideas for furniture, titled edition I.
