The open plan is a common method of organizing office workers; it is cost- efficient and flexible. One large space can house many more people than private offices, share HVAC systems, and provide mutable space for a changing company or organization. At the same time, workers complain that the open plan office is noisy, lacks privacy, and is psychologically unhealthy and impersonal. However, research shows that the open plan office can be modified to retain its efficient characteristics, while providing a healthier environment for workers.
