Otherness is both within us and beyond us. It is a term used to describe the uncomfortable feelings we have when we look inside ourselves and see something we don't want to exist. These feelings are created through interactions with other people and are reflections of both them and ourselves. This is how identities are constructed. We are shaped by how others view us and how we want to be seen. People either become alienated or united. I am focusing on the repressed emotions, instincts, and desires that manifest within us when feeling alienated by society and the rules of civilization. I've given forms to the Otherness inside us by anthropomorphizing the repressed self within.
These sculptures are created by dipping lace and burlap into plaster then wrapping it around bodies to create casts. It is then cut off the individual and bandaged back together. Other materials included are wire, string, wood, and paint.
