Triggering, Jennifer Heffernan MAAE Graduate Student
Triggering is a fictional product that changes the user’s perception and emotional responses through the application of chosen colors, light, and sounds; like “rose-colored glasses” in a box. In the fictional system, the light box contains a “Library” of colors and sounds that combine to create a specific “Filter” through which you will proceed to experience your day. These filters range from vague niceties like “Love” to specific human weaknesses such as “Smug Superiority”.
Part humor, part science fiction, Triggering draws a connection between the malleability of our visual and auditory perception to that of our intellectual comprehension. The science of color and sound, which people usually consider to be definite and unchanging, actually shows that context is everything, just as it is in our understanding of all that we see. If more people were open and aware of the nature of their perception and it’s many influences we may have more empathy and acceptance.
