Siemens commissioned Daniel Popper to make this giant artwork for the Nelson Mandela School of Science and Technology in Mvezo, the birthplace of Nelson Mandela. 3rdFloor followed the making of this epic installation from original conception to its final home in the Eastern Cape.
It meant a week camping out on a construction site and hanging out shooting from some pretty precarious positions. Always a pleasure.
The sculpture stands 14m high, weighs about 3 tons and is made of galvanised steel so it was no joke to build, transport and assemble. The result is an icon of hope that stands as a symbol of Madiba’s love for education.
The project recently won the 2014 BASA Award for Artistic and Business Partnership.
