This independent project allowed me to focus on something that is personal to me: beach pollution. Pollution gets into the sea and on our beaches from many sources but it all results in the same thing, our beaches being overwhelmed with plastic litter, which not only looks horrible, but kills and injures many of our marine animals every year. We live in a throwaway culture, we now have products being designed to just last the summer. The summer period is the busiest time for beach pollution as tourists are visiting the beaches. I aimed to redesign flip flops to increase their product life cycle and to stop them being a ‘one summer’ item by creating more of an emotional attachment between product and user.
