During the Toronto Municipal election there were female candidates who experienced an unprecedented amount of hateful sexism and racism.
In the last stretch of the election period candidates for city council Munira Akubar and Idil Burale along with school trustee candidate Ausma Malik were the victims of hate campaigns ranging from graffiti with racial and sexist slurs on their campaign signs and the distribution of racist flyers.
There are a lot of barriers and difficulties in running for office, racism and sexism should not be one of them.
In response to the situation Women in Toronto politics launched a campaign aimed at supporting these candidates by condemning these actions and promoting supporters to donate or volunteer with their campaigns.
This digital project spread accross the internet quickly, with #thecityiwant trending nationally in Canada.
