Liana Warren's profile

Ephemeral Records

BACKGROUND:
Ephemeral Records is a sustainable record company that prints vinyl records made out of recycled plastic or compostable plastic materials, signs a diverse array of musicians, and hosts shows and events showcasing the musicians signed to the label. The company prioritizes affordability, accessibility, and sustainability in its process.
DESIGN PROBLEM:
To create a logo and branding package that is retro yet modern. The company would like to incorporate a space-age, retro-futurist vibe that plays on the idea of outer space and our “one planet” that we must protect and care for. The branding should appeal to vinyl lovers and musicians alike without appearing overly dated.
DESIGN PROCESS:
I began by creating a mood board of retro-futurist themes. I looked at colors, images, and logos that encapsulated the vintage feel I wanted to incorporate in this branding. From there, I sketched a series of logo options. I ended up with a repeating motif of a star, which really spoke to the futurist aspect of the design. I worked with the idea of the star circling a black hole, keeping with the space theme and evoking that of a spinning record and needle. This theme felt clever and simple without looking too corporate and unapproachable.
DESIGN SOLUTION:
The star and black hole design became the iconic logo of Ephemeral Records, incorporating BD Retrocentric and Courier New typefaces. The brand colors are retro and muted yet modern, with PANTONE 7696 CP, PANTONE 7619 CP, and PANTONE Process Black CP.
