ART 230 Glyph Project

Typography: Glyph Compositions
Sans-serif composition on the left; Serif composition on the right
Students were tasked to complete a project for BYU-I ART 230 that showcased proficiency with glyph compositions. The purpose was to demonstrate the ability to compose Neue Haas Grotesque Bold and Stemple Garamond Roman glyphs while following design theory. The specifications were to include five to eight unique glyphs in each composition and contain at least five different elements of typographic anatomy. Each glyph must be all black or all white, and each composition must contain at least two black glyphs and two white glyphs each. Additionally, each composition was required to be abstract and use only alphanumeric glyphs.

My intent was to create unified and dynamic compositions. I focused on the visual weight of each glyph to achieve asymmetrical balance. I sought to blur the distinction between background and foreground through scale contrast and overlapping.

Composition using Neue Haas Grotesque Bold glyphs (E, r, i, K, j, 6).
Composition using Stemple Garamond glyphs (B, R, i, G, g, S, 2).
