Idiot's Delight- Theater Poster Design

Theater Poster Design
For our final project this semester, we were assigned an 11x17 poster for the Theater Department, promoting its upcoming productions. We had the option to select from three different plays, and I chose "Idiot's Delight" by Robert E. Sherwood.

"The play takes place in the Hotel Monte Gabriel in the Italian Alps during 24 hours at the beginning of a world war. The guest trapped in the hotel by sudden onset of hostilities are from Germany, France, the United States and Britain".

The three adjectives to describe the play are...

Romantic, Precarious, Oblivious

After reviewing the directors visual directions, it was encourage to embrace the influence of  1930's propaganda, classic Hollywood posters and a sense of Old World glamor.

Incorporating these visual directions, I strategically integrated the elements into my poster designs. Here is the outcome:

My design was heavily inspired by 1930s propaganda posters, form which I adopted the dramatic lighting and watercolor aesthetic. Many of these historical posters feature a single subject, with this in mind I decided to opt for a simple composition to a hand in white gloves presenting a bomb on a sliver platter. This choice adds a comedic yet sinister twist to the piece. To soften the overall impact and introduce a romantic element, I selected a soft pastel pink for the background.
Regarding inspiration, displayed above is my mood board, which serves as a foundation for my creative process. Next to that I have some iterations of my design, exploring different versions.
To my pleasant surprise, I found this project to be more enjoyable than anticipated. I had a great time working on it and truly appreciated the creative process involved in designing my poster.

Thank you
