DES 16 Janson Typeface Poster

DES 16 Project 2: Typeface Poster
The aim of this project was to produce a poster of a historically significant typeface. Leading up to the design of the poster, a supplementary research paper was required that addressed the typeface's designer, historical relevancy, and the font's main uses. The final poster is meant to embody the designer's interpretation of the typeface using historical motifs and references to the typeface's creator.
My poster about the typeface Janson
I chose the typeface Janson due to its Hungarian background. Being Hungarian myself, I was excited to discover a classic font designed by Hungarian, Miklós Tótfalusi Kis. Throughout my research, I became fascinated with the history regarding the confusion about who created Janson. The Janson typeface was wrongfully named after Anton Janson, a Dutch type printer in the 17th century, who was believed to have created the typeface until the 1950s. Amazingly, Kis went centuries without receiving credit for his most notable accomplishment.

My poster is inspired by Kis's intended use for Janson, which was using it to print "beautiful Hungarian bibles." My design features ornamentation that was common during the 17th century and a layout that emphasizes body text, as Janson is mainly used as body text. I intentionally focused my design around Kis, as I felt connected to his story. I wanted to deter attention away from the actual name of the typeface and focus on Kis as a person and a designer.
