«Zhytniy Rynok»/«Житній ринок»

«Zhytniy Rynok» or the largest public building of the 70s with a cable roof
Location: Kyiv, str. Verkhniy Val, 16
Years: 1970-1975
Authors: Architect - Shtolko V., Ratushynskyi G., Monina O. Engineers - Bednarskyi B.
Project organization: KyivZNDIEP
The building is located in the historical center of Kyiv, on the territory of the «Zhytniy Rynok» - one of the largest and oldest markets of the city. During the design process, it was assumed that most of the surrounding buildings would be demolished, so that the site would have enough open space around the new building. However, in the future, it was decided to preserve most of the old buildings as a protected zone, which characterized a certain period of Kyiv's development.
This caused some dissonance between the scale of the adjacent buildings and the market building.
The main architectural volume of the building is a trading hall measuring 54x102 m and having three levels. The authors chose the design scheme of the large-span space, namely the frame-type spatial frame made of precast and monolithic reinforced concrete, which makes it possible to free the central internal volume from supports and columns, as a result of which there is more freedom to transform the area for various tasks.
Stylization of various motifs and images is widely used to decorate the building both externally and internally. So, let's say, the elements of sun protection of the facade of the market resemble plant motifs, which are combined with decorative panels on which relief images are present.
The market has a long and rich history, but in recent years it has been declining and needs reconstruction.
In 2023, the famous Ukrainian chef and public activist Yevhen Klopotenko took the initiative to revive the Rye Market. During the year, several public events were held, as well as a vision of the future of Zhytny was developed.
