Sagada: Hanging on Coffin Nails

Photo essay for Sagada field tour in Geography 1 class [2011].

Sagada has become a tourist destination in the Mt. Province. It's high altitude, pristine environment and ethnic culture attracted tourists from within and outside the Philippines. Such exposure resulted in impacts to the environmental and socio-economic landscapes of Sagada. Formerly an agricultural area, its economic activities shifted towards catering tourists, followed by intense land use change. Rice terraces which had been considered as cultural heritage by many is now interjected by urban structures, especially by residential houses and commercial establishments. The boons and banes of these changes was the concern and central idea to which our field visit and class research is anchored.

The background was made from two different photos: the terraces scenery (far back) and the road with two dogs (foreground). Photographs used were taken using a digital camera. The title took inspiration from Sagada's native "burial" traditions wherein coffins are nailed and hanged against mountain and cave walls instead of being buried underground.
