In the special exhibition »Gerhard Marcks & Josef Zenzmaier – Stories of an Encounter«, the Keltenmuseum Hallein presented a juxtaposition of selected works by both artists, focussing on the high esteem in which the Austrian sculptor Josef Zenzmaier held Gerhard Marcks. When they first met in the 1950s, Marcks was one of Germany’s best-known sculptors, and he had a lifelong influence on Zenzmaier’s artistic work. This gave rise to the idea of creating a special dialogue between the works of both artists in an exhibition to mark Josef Zenzmaier’s 90th birthday in 2023. This was all the more important as Zenzmaier was unable to witness the realisation of this idea due to his death.

For the special exhibition »Gerhard Marcks & Josef Zenzmaier – Stories of an Encounter«, we focussed on a high-contrast interplay: self-confident typography in harmony with large-format images by the two artists, printed directly onto honeycomb cardboard, and the resulting different design spaces were combined to create a unique juxtaposition.
