Semiotics Flashcards

Our set of semiotic flashcards reflect the desire to reconnect with nature after an isolating pandemic; straying away from screens/technology.

1. Binary
The first card's effectiveness stems from its metaphorical portrayal of two forked branches, each with a full-blown flower and an unopened bud. This design represents Binary's theme of reconnecting with nature. The visual elements work together: the vibrant blossom represents the desire to return to nature, and the muted bud represents hearts that have withered during quarantine. The deliberate color choice minimizes the bud's presence while emphasizing the blossoming flower. The minimalist style remains consistent with the group, using detail sparingly where necessary, such as the stamens and branch texture, to ensure a balanced and impactful visual story.

2. Metaphor
The graphic design effectively conveys the desire to escape into nature following the confines of the pandemic. The metaphor of a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis is visually striking and captures the essence of transformation. The difficult task of representing the chrysalis was accomplished by using seven different scales of ovals to convey its texture. The layout, with the chrysalis subtly smaller, draws attention to the vibrant butterfly. The colour palette, which includes all from group colour palette, heightens the butterfly's impact and depth, creating a meaningful visual narrative that corresponds to the metaphor of emerging into the world after the pandemic.
