Opera Poster: BlueBeard's Castle

Phase 5
This mock up is a representation on how the poster could look like if it was out there in real life. The poster has a small shine on the keyhole which is almost not preeminent in the actual image but its present its just really subtle. This would be displayed all over the and would include some Septa stops and even subways.
Phase 4
The final Poster was the result of many trials and errors and the result to me is simplistic but really elegant. It is a black and white poster for Béla Bartók’s opera “Bluebeard’s Castle”. The background is black with a subtle floral pattern like the ones that could be found in a fancy tapestry. Each of the keys are placed in a radial pattern pointing to a single keyhole which has a small shine. They also have their own representative shape like I mentioned in the bottom. The text on the poster reads “Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle” and it is letting you know when its taking place which is in “November 16-26”. It is also sponsored by the "Opera of Philadelphia".
Phase 3
This was the first iteration of the final poster. I grabbed one of the sketches I did later on and improved its shape. I arranged them as if they they were all going for one keyhole and everything looks dark around it as if it were door #7. Each key bow(top part) represents each of the door The Torture Chamber - the chain, The Treasury - Gold, The Garden - The leaf, The Armory - The outline of a person, The Lake of Tears - water droplet, The Secret Chamber - the book, Bluebeard's Kingdom - Final room skeleton key, The last picture is one of my favorites iterations I made when designing the poster. I added a pattern in the back which stayed in the final but the type was too big and the texture didn't add much more. It also almost made it look like a pirates tale rather than an old story.
Phase 2
These are some of the different approaches to the poster that I took for the final poster. Although none of these were part of the final one, they served as inspiration for it. From each iteration I learned more and more on how the keys were being layer out, what type could convey the feeling of the opera and what was needs to be improved. From the Door one I thought more abstracted on how going through all of these felt like the women was going through a spiral of death.  The Castle one I was thinking abstracted I looked at many castles and silhouette illustrations of one. I made my own castle shape with a key shape. Decided to put an extra keyhole and key trying to open this fun looking piece. For the ones with the 7 golden key I played around with color but quickly moved on because it did not fit the Opera. The 7th key opening the spiral was one were I was looking for simplicity but did not like the approach I was taking. So when I moved to it opening one door  I made one that was simply just that and then a collage of a door with a golden seven opening towards a a dark blooming void.
Phase 1
For this Project we first needed around 40-50 sketches of an Opera we liked.  There was also a list we could look at if we didn't know many. Out of the bunch the one that caught my eye was "Blue Beard's Castle" After learning about the tragic story the main things I wanted to incorporate were the most important to the story and some of the symbolisms. I also liked how in some text the word blue beard could be separated or bluebeard written altogether. I decided to go  with the more separate approach. The lady that he marries was part of my sketches, the castle symbolizing Blue Beard's heart, The seven doors which contain his most private secrets. Blue Beard being a secretive and dark man. Door #7 being the demise of the lady for being too curious ang going into the dark where she is sealed alongside his other wives. If you Haven't seen the Opera I recommend it alot.
