Packaging Design & Campaign – Craft Gin Branding
This Afrikaans project required the creation of a new gin brand that celebrates the Afrikaans language through satirical commentary on a social or political concern in South Africa.
Client: Aan die Brandt Jenever
Audience: South African women who have an appreciation
and feeling for satire and tongue-in-cheek application.
This project aims to expose political wrongdoings in SA while honoring women for their strategic
spy-skills. Women have driven revolutionary changes in the country, but are often not given the recognition they deserve. They have been the first to lead in male-dominated positions, and their
influence has been critical in moving the country forward. It is important to acknowledge and
celebrate these women as the driving force behind these changes.
The strategy of this project is to expose any fraudulent, unethical, and unkept promises in South African politics, using the experiences of women who work in male-dominated fields. The project intends to achieve this by linking Johanna Brandt's prophecies to each pioneering woman, creating a narrative
that is both persuasive and well-informed, as well as possessing a tone that is firm and confidential.
One pioneering woman – Johanna Brandt - and her team of three (Lilian Ngoyi, Fatima Meer and
Nicky Newton-King) have exposed the hard truths of the injustices perpetrated by the South African political system through the language of Afrikaans, using idioms as Morse code to reach an espionage and intelligence level. Johanna Brandt’s visions prophesied these women’s upbringing, and therefore
their bravery in crushing the political system with the power of women serves as an inspiration to
all who seek to fight against tyranny and injustice.
