The Feeling of Pain | Visual Summary

Major Project | Visual Summary
When I study at London College of Communication for my MA Graphic design course. I I began to study how to use information design to express the feeling of pain. This visual summary shows the whole process about the topic and represent how I research the theme.

The inspiration for this project stems from my personal experience. Actually, I had a severe migraine for more than two years and I have tried a variety of treatments. But most of them were not working. At the same time, I found that it was obviously difficult to describe the feeling of pain and hard to communicate with doctors. From that time, I have been curious about how different people sense pains in their body. What are the forms of abstract feeling of pain? Whether different gender, age, nationality and occupation will affect people to interpret their feeling of pain differently or not? Therefore, I decided to use my major project to learn and explore the feeling of pain as well as how to use some graphic methods to visualise it. After several months of studies for pain and information design, my final research question has been narrowed down into: How can visual language and information design be utilized to represent the feeling of pain.

The aim of this project is to research and analyse how different people sense a diversity of pains; meanwhile, investigate how this abstract feeling can be visually represented into concrete information. After analysing and comparing the collected data from different perspectives, I could find whether different groups have different tendencies to interpret pain. Another purpose of this project is using this opportunity to learn how multiple amounts of information can be displayed by infographics, which can achieve a balance between visual beauty and clear information delivery.
Thank you.
