Acikiwir Typeface
2022
This typeface is the my work in Typeface Design Class, I was asked to create a typeface based on vernacular typography that can be found around Bandung City and I choose hand-painted signage from a Cireng Street vendor.
Typeface Origin
Acikiwir was found on a Cireng street vendor in Simpang Dago Traditional Market, Bandung. Cireng is a snack made from tapioca flour or sago starch, the texture is chewy like a ricecake. Usually, there is filling inside, and each fillings has different shapes. It's hand painted sign that has groovy & funky vibes to it. Each letter have the curves that shows the grooviness.
The Name Acikiwir
Acikiwir is a play word from Aci and Icikiwir. Aci represents Cireng which stands for aci digoreng (fried tapioca) and Icikiwir is a phrase usually said in Dangdut culture that describes the feelings of someone who is happily singing and humming in the heart. Usually, the phrase Icikiwir is pronounced when a person is feeling happy.
Began the process by tracing the signage and converting to vector. Then, I started to do exploration on the letters. Sketching manually and digitally, making alternative and refining the shape of the letters. Trials and errors are the whole story of this typeface.
