Personal - CGI Still Life
Noah's Mill.
_____ 3rd of the series 'Whiskey, Flower and Butterfly'
'Vaity of vanities, saith the Preacher, Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.'
- Bible's old Testament in Ecclesiastes 12:8
Vanitas is a genre of art which uses symbolism to show the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death. The paintings contains several symbolics that remind us of the finiteness of life (flowers, skeletons, insects, etc.) and the futility of worldly pleasures (instruments, wine, books, etc.)
I chose whiskey as the main iconic object for my Vanitas still life.
For each brand of whiskey, I created a mood that I thought would be appropriate.
Then chose the secondary objects of flowers and butterflies to match the mood.
I hope you enjoy.

Noah's Mill was the first drink that got me interested in whiskey.
From the outside, it's hard to see anything design-wise unusual about it.
So I decided to reflect the way this whisky made me interested in other whiskies.
So I decided to reflect the way this whisky made me interested in other whiskies.
One of the subtopics is butterflies, so I decorated a lepidopterist's desk.
Since this scene is darker than the other scenes in the series,
I wanted to make sure it didn't look too dark,
so I used a caustics on the glass to make the shadows look lighter.

Behind The Scene
Reference _____
The overall color and mood was inspired by Gerrit dou's "Astoronomer by candlelight"
He was one of Rembrandt's first pupils and loved the softness of the candlelight in his paintings.

Making _____
I experimented with a variety of modeling, texturing, and lighting throughout this series of projects.
If there's a better way to say it, please don't hesitate to give me feedback.
Drawing _____
I drew and created most of the illustrations and text sources.
This was the most time-consuming part of the process,
but I was excited to do it because I hadn't drawn in a long time.
Book _____
The open book is based on the real-life book "A Synonymic List of Butterflies Korea"
by Korean entomologist Seok Ju-myung.
