CRT 300 Rapid & Improvisational Prototyping - #1 Hackathon
Leafy Threads
By: Bailey Henderson
Details:
This project was a string-art-inspired art piece that depicts a small plant. I used materials such as yarn, 3/4" nails, a wooden plaque, and some decorative flowers to create this. I really loved the natural aspect of this project; including a piece of wood that still included the rawness of nature was super supportive of my overall theme. Additionally, using string/yarn is fitting. The 3D flowers were a last-minute addition; however, they really did wonders in bringing the entire project together. It gave it the life I was looking for!
Importance:
This project was an art piece focused on contributing to a specific theme. I am currently a junior in the Creative Technologies Program at Berry College. However, as a senior, I will be tasked with finding a theme representing my creations at Berry. For now, at least, I decided that my theme will be-- "Representing the Natural World Through Art and Technology.
Steps:
1. First, I had to brainstorm an idea of what kind of plant I wanted to create using string art and what patterns I was looking for aesthetically. Below are inspirational pictures:
2. Next, I collected all the needed materials, including yarn/string, 3/4" nails, a wooden plaque, and flowers for decorating. I got two different yarn sizes for the plant and the pot. Below is a picture of my materials:
3. It was finally time to start creating the string-art plant. Before using the yarn, I needed to lay out the plant's outline. I placed a paper with my desired outline on the wooden board and taped the edges down. Then, I started hammering in my nails along the design. At first, I was carefully measuring the space between each nail, but once I reached the curvy parts of the leaves, I started just placing the nails as far as I felt was necessary. Another helpful tool that became really useful was a pair of needle nose plyers. These helped me carefully hold the small nail in place while I hammered it down into the wood. Below are pictures of this process:
4. After completing the previous step, I could finally start adding the yarn. This process took quite some time, so I decided to include a video time-lapse below:
5. At last, all that was left was to add the decorative flowers and sign my name. The project was complete!
