QUICK LOOK: Man's Best Tech, Entertaining Story Design

I worked with reporter Andrew Holik to recreate his traditional story about diabetes sniffing dogs into a fun, interactive iPad magazine article - Man's Best Tech. Man's Best Tech uses autoplay video, graphics, a distinct voice and interactive elements to take Holik's "breaking news" style piece and turn it into an unforgettable celebration of man's best friend. This story "cover" is actually animated, and when live shows a dog rapidly sniffing blood cells - the big theme of the feature.
The story is competely reworked to shift it from one-day of newsworthiness to evergreen, fun read. This page summarizes info I gathered about the dog's training in a visually stimulating manner, and allows readers to determine whether they'd like to delve futher into this info by scrolling on themselves. Throughout the piece photos I gathered with photographer Jacob Sweeney-Samuelson add excitement and comedy to the piece.
Pages such as this are educational and fun, allowing users to zoom in on some of the most striking and exciting dog photographs I could take or find.
The original story had only one photograph and was easily forgotten, despite the fun and interesting info Holik gathered in his reporting.
Users are invited to explore more pictures of dogs or move quickly to the parts of the story they find most interesting - leaving their experience up to them.
At the end of the story they're unintrusively invited to share via mail, Twitter or Facebook - or they can simply return to the top to be sure they haven't missed anything.
I employ rapid thumbnailing and storyboarding to get out all of my ideas about where a story could go. Through rapid prototyping and testing I graduaally work towards a final design.
