Elderly Noncompliance in Medication

As aging population is getting serious in the future, the healthcare system becomes evermore important, my design issue focuses on the noncompliance on medication among the elderly.

From first round research, almost two third of adults aged 65 and above find it difficult to read text off current medicine packaging. They also found it hard to remember to take their medication.

The second part, the interviews greatly helped me in this project as it gave much more insight and perspective on the healthcare for the elderly.

My primary target audience will be the older adults aged 65 and above, while my secondary target audience will be professionals working in healthcare sectors such as nurses, doctors.

From my research, most of the elderly speak mainly chinese  or other dialects. I have tried to substitute words and information with visuals and colours to help the elderly see and understand better.

With the help of visuals ad education, it makes it easier for the elderly to remember and understand their medication better. This will lead to a better and more proper way of taking medication which will prevent lesser death by side effects and overdosing.

- Information Poster -

The information poster helps the elderly and the caregivers to refer and understand the pictograms and pictures used in the packaging.

It is colourful so that it attracts the eye of people and makes it easier to absorb and read.

- Playing Cards -

The play cards are like game cards that are compact and fits in the hand easily for the elderly to read and remember instead of looking at the poster.
- Packaging -

Most packaging offered by pharmacist, clinics and hospitals are not really elderly friendly.

The words are too small for them to read and the information is dry.

The redesigned packaging allows the elderly to differentiate their own medication by colour and other visual aids such as pictograms and symbols.

It is much more interactive than the traditional packaging today.

It is beneficial that the elderly are able to know and understand their own use of medicine so as to avoid overdosing and noncompliance.
- Medical Pocket Book -

The problem with most elderly patients, is that they tend to visit many doctors, and these doctors sometimes give the same drugs or drugs that could counteract other medication that the elderly are currently using. This is a serious issue as it will result in overdosing and dire side effects.

A solution to the problem would involve the doctors to have a type of system that shares the patients information such as their medical history, drug allergies and what kind of medication they are currently having. As some elderly patients are unable to  remember their own medicine, it will be useful if it is written down.

The medical pocket book allows doctors to record the patient’s information such as drug usage, allergies and history so that when the elderly patients visit another doctor or specialist, they will have written records to help better communicate and hasten their recovery.
- Final Outcome Video -

The final outcome video is a result from the redesigning of the packaging and the medical pocket book.

It shows what the caregivers at Truepassion Healthcare and elderly think and feel about the product.

Whether it helps them and makes it easier for them to remember.
