Casa do Castanheiro

Casa do Castanheiro

For my first school project in the University of Architecture of Lisbon I had to represent a portuguese reference of modern architecture in drawings and models. It was assigned to me to represent the Casa do Castanheiro, by
João Mendes Ribeiro.

The fact that Casa do Castanheiro is a non-architectural fact is very symbolic and enchanted me from the beginning of the presentation of the exercise, the chestnut tree is not only present in the name of the house, it is truly the soul of the entire project, which makes it so unique.
The relationship with nature goes beyond the landscape, it is present throughout the architectural thinking of the building, the views chosen for the large windows and the entry of light make this incredible dialogue happen that exists between architecture and nature from within (and outside as well) of the building, but that's not all, the meticulous choice of materials in the house inter-relate with the landscape, the colors used and its minimalist homogeneity establish a fascinating, almost inseparable link between the landscape and the house, as if one depended on the other to exist.
The cutouts and raumplan of the project under analysis are topics that also reinforce this dynamism of nature in this connection with architecture, as they resemble the irregular and very uneven terrain of the location, which creates an ironically and highly harmonious scenario.
Through functionality, simplification of form, the harmony of materials and design with nature, an innovative and eccentric structure is configured, integrated with nature and the surrounding landscape.
This is about my collection of architecture models that I don't have space to keep at home.

I will never forget you, Casa do Castanheiro
