Bentley Magazine issue seventy eight
The Winning Edge

For this feature, the topic concerned the development of sports technology in recent years – from golf and tennis to F1 and running – but is there a line to be drawn? How much can a person's performance be affected by the gear they use?

As this feature was less about name dropping products and more about the editorial point being made, the decision to illustrate the feature was a no-brainer and we turned to the wonderful styling of Marian to bring the idea to life.

The main theme of the editorial had a clear message – brilliant gear doesn't necessarily make you a brilliant sportsperson – so it was this that we focused on for this commission and while we wanted to give Marian as much freedom as we could to express her style, I did want to make sure we populated the article with all the products mentioned throughout – removing any logos to avoid any unwanted attention or issues.

The main idea that was briefed to Marian, was that over the three spread there should be an overarching story – a golf ball being tee'd off with a dotted line passing over the first spread, continuing over the page and 'bouncing' off of a tennis racket before coming to rest on the final spread at the edge of the hole – sitting at the edge of the hole is the dejected golfer – after all that money spent and technology invested in, a hole in one is still not a given!
