Usman Khawaja's Form and Challenges Ahead in Ashes 2023 Tour of England
In the latest cricket news, Australia clinched victory in the World Test Championship final 2023 on Sunday, June 11, with a resounding 209-run triumph over India. Following their historic win, Australia is now preparing to face England in the Ashes 2023 series, set to commence on June 16 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. This upcoming series holds significant importance for Australian opener Usman Khawaja, who has struggled to perform well in England.
Khawaja's record in England shows that he has scored 249 runs at an average of 17.78 in 14 innings. However, since his comeback to the Australian Test team in 2022, the left-handed batsman has been in exceptional form, averaging over 60 with the bat. When asked about his prospects in English conditions this time, Khawaja acknowledged that ups and downs are inherent in the game, indicating his readiness to face any challenges that come his way.
“Cricket is just that kind of game, it goes up and down, up and down. Hopefully, I don’t experience a down again, but odds are I will. If you play long enough you always do. That’s just the crux of it,” Khawaja was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
Notably, the opening batter was a member of Australia's team for The Ashes 2019 in England, but was later pulled from the team due to his poor performance in the series. Later, in Ashes 2021–2022, he returned, and ever since, he has been in imperious shape. He didn't have a great start in England, though, as he was out in the first two innings in the WTC 2023 final for 0 and 13.
Khawaja continued by describing his time on the Australian team and how he's always felt like an outsider.
“Luckily, my teammates were always respectful to me. But I always felt like an outsider. I don’t drink (alcohol). And I don’t buy guys drinks. But I’ve no issues with people drinking alcohol, either, it’s your life, do whatever you want to do. I respect that and they respect me,” he added.
The upcoming tour of England holds significant importance for 36-year-old Usman Khawaja, as it may shape his future in the Australian team. With limited time remaining before the first Ashes Test commences on June 16, Khawaja faces the challenge of figuring out how to succeed in English conditions. Australia has retained the Ashes in the last three series and will be determined to make it four consecutive victories by overcoming England's 'Bazball' strategy.
As for the match prediction, it is difficult to determine the outcome of the Ashes series as it depends on various factors such as team performance, individual player form, pitch conditions, and other variables. Both teams will be vying for victory, and the series is expected to be fiercely contested. The ultimate result will be determined by the performance and strategies employed by both sides throughout the series.
