Abstractions from Light and Shadow

For these designs, I took inspiration from the light and shadow seen in my photography.
The concept of this spring collection is abstractions from light and shadow. Light is something that is fleeting and ephermal and can be used to describe something of little weight. Shadow can represent something faintly and have comparative darkness. The textiles created are used from my photographs of either light or shadow found in nature or light made from incandescent lighting that constrasts against a dark backdrop.

The clothing I designed have a contrast of solid and sheer fabrics showcasing the prints. Adding to the idea of light and shadow, the garments are meant for eveningwear, using high quality materials that would showcase the patterns, and the “lights” in the patterns would stand out in a dark setting.
While designing to collection, I decided that I would create eveningwear for spring, which is why three of the garments are dresses, and both pants are bias cut and meant to be made with silk or charmuese.
Flats for the collection.
This first photo I used is a blurred photo depicting the light filtering in from the trees

I decided that changing and abstracting the photo too much while creating the digital prints actually took away from the photos which were already abstract looking themselves. I decided to stick to mirroring the photographs to create prints instead.
This print and the last print are photos of a star light I photographed in my room with all other lights off; I used a long exposure and moved my camera around which abstracted the image and created motion with the lights peeking from the star lamp.
