Vesak Festival in Sri Lanka

On the full moon of the lunar month usually May, Buddhists around the world celebrate Vesak, also known as Buddha Day, which is one of the most important festivals in Buddhism. The festival commemorates the birth of Buddha and, for some, marks the day of his enlightenment when he discovered the meaning of life.

Vesak is celebrated as a religious and cultural festival in Sri Lanka in May, and it's a colourful event with streets and homes adorned with lights and lanterns. People of all religions participate in the festivities.

This photos were taken during the Vesak festival in Sri Lanka from a trip back to my birth country in 2014. Please note that the quality of the photos may be compromised as they were all taken handheld at night.
