DES 16: Project 3
Zine--Personal Identity
For this project, a mini magazine layout was created as a pathway for self-expression and show one's controversial views on political or social issues that may appear out of the norm in today's society. The normalization of the Chola style, historically embraced and created by Chicanas/xs and Latinas/xs, has become an issue within the fashion industry. Their form of dress has been narrowed down to simply a form of dress or makeup look that has been stereotyped by the media, influencers, and major top artists, but it is important to recognize its historical context and how Cholas relate such dress and look to their everyday lives. This zine takes an empowering stance on how the Chola style has been culturally appropriated by those who use it merely as a costume and disregards the rightful recognition to the ones who created and embodied it within Chicana(x)/Latina(x) culture.
