PeaceTones Haiti Sings

Haiti Sings Project
This video and the photographs below were taken in Port-au-Prince in August 2010 for a contest we ran in Haiti with my nonprofit, PeaceTones.  PeaceTones is a fair trade music movement.  We work with musicians in developing countries, holding seminars and creating accessible resources to teach musicians how to protect and sell their music around the world. Musicians have the unique ability in societies across the world to transcend politics and poverty to speak the universal language of peace and social justice.  PeaceTones makes an economic bridge between music lovers and these musicians, generating long-term and sustainable income for them and their communities.  Find out more about how we work here.
This video was filmed by myself and my colleague, as one of sixty videos recorded for an online contest we ran for the PeaceTones Haiti Sings project.  Bill Nathan is the amazing traditional Haitian drummer filmed here.
The first thing you notice on arrival in Port-au-Prince over six months after the aerthquake of January 12 struck is that the entire city is cracked and enveloped in rubble.
An abandoned tent in a tent camp we visited many times on our trip.  Residents of the camp have been living there for over a year and a half now (at the writing of this caption in June 2011) and the temporary tents provided by aid relief organizations, meant to last only a couple of months until permanent housing is obtained, continue to be the only shelter for thousands of residents of Port-au-Prince.
The floor of one of our contestants' tent.
The grandson of one of our contestants, Ester.
Ester's daughter with her children.  Three generations of Ester's family live in two tents, side by side.
Clouds through Ester's tarp.
A schoolhouse whose playground is now occupied by one of Port-au-Prince's many tent camps.
