Alternatives To Direct Cremation That Focus On Services
The prevalence of direct cremation is rising and has been for a while. Harsh reality: More and more people are realising that having a full-blown traditional funeral is not only unneeded but also expensive.

This might be due to a lack of value education, the pandemic, declining religious identifications, all three, or none of the above. Whatever the cause, we want to arm you with a few choices to present to families that want to avoid the burden and expense of a typical burial.

You may help families by providing these choices, which will both help families and keep the lights on.

Here are 6 possibilities to give families that choose direct cremation:

1. Ash-spreading ritual

Families that don't necessarily want any form of service nonetheless (often) want to have their lives resolved. That is what families receive from an ash sprinkling ritual. They can say their final goodbyes and experience firsthand what it means to allow their loved one to be laid to rest by scattering the ashes in an area that holds special value for them.

2. A ceremony of "letting go"

When my grandparents passed away, one thing I wish I could have done with my family is to have a sharing circle where we could have each shared how much our grandparents meant to us. You can do this in a meaningful location for the deceased person's and their surviving family, whether it is private or public.

The ceremony is straightforward: decide on a meeting place and give each family member a few minutes to express their greatest recollections of the deceased. After each sharing, you can give everyone a minute to react to or "resonate" with what was just said. The family receives a lot of emotional support from this straightforward ceremony, which also strengthens family ties. The ritual can be concluded with a little meditation or even by releasing or burying something.

3. A picnic or feast in remembrance

This is a pretty simple approach to keep everyone entertained and create a festive atmosphere for families who wish to honour a loved one. If you have the space, host at your funeral home. If not, use a lovely outdoor cemetery instead. Each person should prepare a food that either brings them or their loved one's memory to mind.

Offer prompts or a place for sharing during the meal to encourage conversation about the deceased person and the sharing of memories and tales. This option is one of our favourites because it's so simple to set up and makes everyone participate actively in planning funerals!

4. A release event

When balloons, butterflies, doves, and everything in between are released as part of the funeral service, that is one of my favourite parts. Simply propose this as the funeral service, during which each person has the opportunity to share a recollection or a narrative before they all release a selected object into the air. My preferred approach is to use balloons and ask everyone to write a note to a loved one and place it inside the balloon before releasing it.

5. Memorial video revelation

A tribute video is a wonderful present to provide families that don't have the time or resources to organise a ceremonial event. Simply ask them to share their favourite pictures and videos of the deceased, then use your tribute video programme to produce a video and distribute copies to any interested family members. You might even have a virtual watch party for their memorial movie so that everyone may share their reactions as they watch it. An easy yet powerful method for assisting families through their grieving process.

6. Virtual dining event

The concept of a virtual dinner party celebration is a terrific method to include everyone in the grieving process and life celebration for those who live far away from their loved one and are unable to travel. Request the favourite recipe from the nearest relative, have everyone cook it on their own, and then invite everyone to a Zoom meeting to consume the meal and exchange memories and experiences. Also always welcome is wine.
