This project explores the power of design through the lens of the graphics of cigarette packaging. Cigarettes are everywhere—in every country and in every culture. Despite its proven harmful effects, cigarette smoking is part of the daily routine of billions of people worldwide.
Cigarette packaging is a reflection of the aspirations or personality of the consumer. Studied from both an Eastern and Western perspective, this installation presents the history of prominent brands as well as packaging across cultures. It deconstructs the graphic language of cigarette packaging, showcasing plain
white boxes with adjectives that describe a type of smoker. Audience of the exhibition are encourage to open a box and discover whether their personality and aspirations match the brand.
