Publication Design: Article by Eric Carter

The publication design is an 8-page saddle stitch booklet for the design op-ed Do You Want Typography or Do You Want The Truth by Eric Carter. The goal of the project is to represent the article and its arguments with the arrangement of the text and images and the choice of typefaces/type styles in the booklet. The article focuses on issues that the author believes have become prevalent in the world of design such as a change in what is valued, the representation within design, and how those can have real-world impacts not only to the design world but to real-world communities. It challenges the reader to look at their own work and values so it was important to clearly get each part across.
Initial iterations of the first spread of the booklet were made in InDesign  in order to determine the grid system for the rest of the spreads, the arrangement of the text and images as well as to choose two typefaces/styles to use for the rest of the booklet. These iterations resulted in a 10 by 4 grid used throughout the booklet.
A bold sans serif (Futura)and a light serif (Rogliano)were selected for the titles and body text respectively which created a contrast between the different elements of the content of the article like the subheading and text as well as an emphasis on certain elements such as pull quotes.
A small point size was chosen for the main text as it allowed the article to fit into the booklet format comfortably and each of the main points to have its own space in the booklet.
This made each part of the article easy to find in each spread. Most images were kept within the spreads to support the ideas of the text. The cover and inside covers focus on the typography to correlate with the title itself and highlight the two main words that carry the overall idea of the op-ed. These elements work together to present the article in a structured and clear way that shows each point that the author is making in a way that flows from one argument to the next.
