Mapplethorpe Film
This film was an eye opener for me. With how many taboo subjects the film goes on about made the film much more interesting. Taboo subjects are never discussed but the way Robert casually talked about gay sex, or his many lovers was just amazing in my opinion. I like those type of people that talk about taboo subjects that shouldn't be taboo. Our society made sex taboo because it's how it's always been but it's a part of life. Of course people should respect others if they don't want to talk about it but I just think some things about what is taboo or not should be reconsidered. This film was basically about himself, how he grew up and what led to him documenting his life and ideas. This film somewhat reminded me of the Sally Mann, but there are some obvious differences. Robert didn't use an older camera and mostly photographed himself and gay people, that was his whole thing. Thus, the only similarity is that they both wanted to put their work out there, their works being taboo. They both did it differently though, and Sally Mann may have went a little overboard. Anyway, Robert was the definition of not giving a darn about what people thought. He was so full of ambition that even when he got AIDS he still tried to continue his work. I respect the perseverance this man had and don't no longer wonder why this film was made about it. It's pretty obvious why now.
