Opening as part of the Smithsonian Institution in 2016, the museum celebrates the cultural achievements and historical accomplishments of Black Americans. Also exploring national values, it spans four floors and sponsors several major exhibits:
1. Reckoning - This collection delves into visual art expressing Black protests, such as the outcries resulting from the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Eric Garner. Visitors can pursue a digital experience with Smithsonian Hi, a website that displays interviews, artifacts, and educational videos.
2. Explore More! - Located on the second floor, this space encompasses learning resources for various domains, such as family history, slave ships, and step dancing. In addition, the Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts allows visitors to arrange uploads of their home movies to add to the collection.
3. Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures - Opening in March 2023, this exhibit will illustrate a theoretical framework by which Black history and culture are reinterpreted to bring out themes of hope and regeneration. Works of musician George Clinton and science fiction author Octavia Butler will be presented.
