How to Identify the quality of Marbles and granites

How to identify Quality of marbles and granites?
Green Marble
Checking the quality of white granite countertops and natural stones has always been a tough assignment. Merely analyzing the images and samples at the factory or quarries is not enough to determine the quality of natural stones such as granite. Being in the natural stone industry for 5 years, I have tried to formulate a simple and practical approach how to select and identifying high-quality granite.

I remember when I step foot in the marble and granite industry, I made many mistakes while selecting the quality of granites. You don't need to repeat such mistakes as i provide you a basic approach to analyzing the granite.

Always keep the properties of natural stones in mind, in the case of granites, Let us discuss the properties of granite. Remember with the help of properties you can easily judge the quality of stones.

The properties of granite -

it is highly durable.
it is heat resistant (As black color absorbs heat, But Black granite).
]last up to decades with low/zero maintenance.
it is available in many variations of black color.
it is weather-resistant.

Remember to ask the questions on quality to the supplier, if the supplier lacks to explain the qualities (mentioned above) then you need to wait while making a purchase decision.
Now Let us discuss how to identify the right granite for you

Check the quality of polished surface -

The higher the polish on the granite, the higher will be the price of granite. Look for the difference in the quality of the polished surface. Highly polished granites look highly appealing and induces luxury appeal.

Check for the uniforms in the thickness of granites -

That means, granite must be uniform from the top to the middle till the bottom. If you identify any thickness error from any edge, then notify and ask questions to the natural stone supplier. A good quality granite has to be uniform in terms of thickness.

Check for the cracks on the surface -

A good quality granite is never cracked at any point. Be sure to check for cracks and scratches. You can use ultrasonic machines to identify the cracks inside. Or else you can also spray water on the surface of the granite. Where ever water streams in a flow you must understand it is a crack or long tail crack line on the surface of the water.

Check for porosity -

Just extract lemon juice on the surface of the granite, if granite absorbs the lemon juice then it has high porosity, Which directly indicates poor quality. Be sure to conduct this test for the sample that the natural stone supplier has provided and check for the actual stone which you are about to get delivered in order to avoid spamming.

Check for the Coating -

Remember many stone suppliers use artificial coating, with the help of such coating the cracks and spillages can be easily hidden out and you won't be able to identify the cracks and the true quality of granite. Use a tool called "5-6 on the Mohr’s Hardness scale" to check for the artificial coating. If you lack the tool then jsut simply put up the scratch on the surface of the granite, if the scratch appears on the surface then there is no artificial coating. If the scratch does not appear then the supplier has used the artificial coating to hide the scratches.

Remember such methods below they are just simple and straightforward measures to check the quality of granite.
