TODD HIDO - HOUSE HUNTING
The colour in this photo is a subtle purple which is unnatural for a suburban street which invokes a certain dreamlike or fantasy feeling from the image. The yellow of the street lamp and paint on the road is contrasted with the purple/grey hue of the sky which is lightly reflected off of the road. The lights in the building being on tells us that there are people in the building potentially watching.
This photo is a good example of Todd Hido's use of fog in his photographs as he uses it to fragment the light from nearby streetlamps to create interesting lighting effects such as the one in this photo. Without the fog, this house would likely just be a solid colour of yellow from the streetlights. However, the fog fragments the light and makes a gradient of grey-yellow light across the house. The yellow light being on in the house also tells us again that there are people inside.
There is a sense of stillness present in this photo and also in Todd's other work particularly in the "House Hunting" project. This can be attributed to Todd's use of lines and symmetry in his photos. He photos architecture with a tripod so as to keep the perspective straight. The use of shadows is also very intriguing in this photo as the shadows become blue rather than black due to the colour of the streetlamps.
The feeling I get from Todd Hido's photography is a lonely nostalgia. His photos look like he has taken a camera into a dream as he uses colours that aren't conventional of the places he is photographing. I will be inspiring my next few shoots after his work as the feeling I get from his photos is similar to what I want to capture and document.
