Deconstructivism Postcard Design

Deconstructivism is a post-modernist style that challenged the status quo in typography and layout, and using multiple layers of meaning in the design.

I interpreted this style as a rebellion against the structured, minimalist style of modernism architecture that was prominent at the time. By incorporating imagery of cold, minimal skyscrapers, tearing it up and drawing on top of it, I was able to convey a sense of self-expression. Out of the four design styles I analysed, deconstructivism is the one I struggled with the most. After spending the previous semester practicing using grids and the rules of structure, it was jarring to be told to throw all of that out the window. After a lot of trial and error, I think that this design that is “breaking the rules” captures the essence of deconstructivism.

This design is one of four postcards I designed as part of an assignment as a part of my university degree. I was tasked with analysing a range of iconic design movements and styles, while interpreting the theme “Design is…” in a design targeting high school students considering studying at the University of Waikato.
