Despite Cayetana's wishes, a few years later it was discovered that two of the children - Manuel and Francisca - were hers, so they were picked up and returned to their duties. To Tomasa's advantage, she was not discovered and was able to continue living in freedom under Candelaria's care.
So the judge went to notify Tomasa that she was indeed a slave belonging to Don Gregorio Ulloa. However, due to the crime of pretending to be a free person, she was charged 24 pesos and 5 reales for the inconvenience. She accepted this without protest and left for her master's house.
