Marriage Equality Infographic

Andre Wyatt and I designed this infographic for The Monastary in Fall 2013. At the time, there were a number of states reevaluating their current marriage laws, so it was an ideal time for The Monastary to invest in an infographic for their website and newsletter.

Besides meeting the client's needs and expectations for design and content, we faced two main challenges in completing this incographic. For starters, laws across the nation were changing almost every week during our work. We had to keep up with current events and research to make sure our data, especially our map, reflected the most recent changes and updates to marriage laws across the United States.

Our second challenge was using a diverse range of data to tell a compelling story. We had to give special thought to the tone of the data and how it developed throughout the infographic. We wanted to ensure that we captured the difficulties marriage equality has faced as well as the many recent triumphs.

The completed infographic illustrates some foundational knowledge about where marriage stands in the U.S. followed by a breakdown of attitudes toward gay marriage, geographical information, and a timeline of landmark events.
