SXSW 2011 Internship: 1/11 - 4/11

Near the culmination of my education at the Art Institute I required an internship. I lucked out and was welcomed to the team for SXSW 2011 as an intern in the publication department of the Interactive festival. The following are examples of the main projects I worked on during my time there. In this section I will show some of my work on publication design and signage. See the part 1 page for examples of some more illustration heavy projects I did.
Interactive Awards Ceremony Program Book

What started as an assignment to design the cover for a booklet that would be handed out to all the attendants of the Interactive Awards ceremony that takes place at the end of the Interactive Festival, became one of the longer projects of the internship to layout the rest of the book itself. In the end it was one of the most educational experiences of my internship and my superiors were kind enough to let the lowly intern have input on all the details from meetings with the printers about paper choices to which font to request from sponsors.

Interactive Festival Signage

By far the largest in terms of production, another project I contributed to was the design of all the signage used for the 2011 SXSW Festival. It was a collaboration between myself and two other interns, Robbie Polk and Katrina Repman. We came up with a cohesive design and layout for the signage that would fit with the SXSW 2011 brand and applied it to signs ranging from directional ones found around the Austin Convention Center to the large schedule listings put outside of each room that was being used for presentations.

As I mentioned in the part 1 page of my internship projects, I was (still am?) on a kick of designing with iconography and took this project one step further to come up with unique logos for each room that was being used for a specific theme. Pictured are examples such as the press hat for the Journalism Summit and the joystick for the Game Developer Meet Up.

The initial brand design for the SXSW 2011 Festival was created by the local Austin design firm, Foxtrot Bravo Alpha.
