A small workshop on rug making learning techniques of weaving a rug like plain weave , rya and other tpes of weaves on different mediums like cardboard weaving, frame loom weaving and wodden frame loom weaving.
Different types of weaves on cardboard.
Plain weave followed by pattern weaving and rya in the end.
Metamorphosis of a painting into a rug. An assignment where i gained inspiration from artist Tori Snow's painting 'The Abstract Garden'. A frame loom made using sunboard was used to create this rug. Using the 'rya' technique entirely to replicate the artist's painting. The rya technique is basically a knotting method, with each knot composed of three strands of wool. This technique provides a furry surface to the rug.

My interpretation into a rug:
The final rug :
The next assignment of the workshop was to create a rug using non-yarn material. Using materials which arent generally used to make rugs. On thinking upon which material to use, i started thinking in terms of different varieties of fibres from which further yarns are processed.
Jute fibre was the first material i decided to use when i passed by a flower shop and saw the vendor use twisted jute ropes, long fibres of jute spun into coarse and strong ropes. The jute ropes have their own natural brownish shade which i decided to blend with coarse banana fibre ropes, which act as raw material in producing other products like baskets, bags and handmade paper. These fibres have an amber look.
With two fibres having a similar kind of shade, i relooked into the color pallet and used plum coloured wool in the warp of the rug in order to introduce a new colour and also balance out the frequency of the brown color.
The final output
A very interesting feedback which i recieved  was that it doesnt look like a mat or a rug but it looks like a wall hanging instead.
