This project's front end was designed by SheWasOnly built by me
Middle 8 magazine is a site that was designed to be purely digital and site based but still have the aesthetic feel and experential feel of a magazine. We set out to basically not answer that brief with 'turning pages' and sound effects of paper, like so many digital outlets have done, but more to take the rules of type and layout from print mediums and apply them to the project mixed in with all of the benefits of a digital platform.
I created the site from scratch using no frameworks, so that it was entirely tailored to the client. A backend CMS was created which multiple issues could be created and then articles reviewed and reordered and published to the issues. Issues were then released, with all of the articles being launched at once, similar to a real magazine and in opposition to blogs and other news sites.
Articles are then read in a linear fashion, because the order has been curated as part of the overall issue's feel, again like a standard magazine. Articles are basically broken down into different mediums, either text, Q&A, video and photo - each fully utilising print aesthetic and digital performance to best show them off.
The articles are crafted in the backend in an extremely visual manner, full page editor and true to life visual feedback while editing, to encourage the authors to actually create the articles themselves on the site as opposed to a word processor first.
